Ali Faraz Qawwal – A Legacy of Sufi Music
Ali Faraz Qawwal, born in 1988, is a prominent figure in the world of qawwali, carrying forward the rich musical heritage of his family. He is the youngest son of Ustad Sarfraz, a celebrated musician from a distinguished and historic Pakistani musical family. The family’s roots in music trace back to the Indian state of Rajasthan, where they were among the most prominent music directors of their time.
Ali’s lineage is steeped in the legacy of qawwali and Sufi music, which began over 80 years ago when his ancestors established their group. Following the partition of India in 1947, Ali’s grandfather, M. Sodagar, relocated the family to Pakistan and settled in Lahore. It was there that the family’s qawwali group, known as the Lajpal Qawwali Band, rose to national prominence.
A Musical Legacy
The Lajpal Qawwali Band quickly became a household name, renowned for their diverse repertoire of classical, spiritual (Sufi), and popular music. Their exceptional command of languages, including Urdu, Persian, and Punjabi, enabled them to connect with audiences across cultural and linguistic boundaries. They were pioneers in the field, becoming one of the first groups to record qawwali music and gaining widespread recognition through regular appearances on All Pakistan Radio and Television.
